Richard was one of my boyhood heroes, but I've since discovered that he had a few failings. He came from a dysfunctional family, even though he was of royal blood. He ruled England for ten years, even though he was hardly ever there. He is probably the most famous crusader, but the Crusades are often quoted as an example of religion causing wars. But Richard seemed to like fighting anyway, against his father and his brothers, the king of France, anybody really. It is important that young people develop a broad concept of monarchy so that they understand the preference for democracy.
