Charlemage was king of the Franks, which is where the name France comes from. He lived from 742 to 814 and did a lot of good things to make his court the cultural centre of what we now call Europe. He was a great patron of education and the arts, which is good, but he did this on the basis of brutal wars and oppression of the Saxons in particular.
I think most of us would rather live in the 21st century than in the 9th, but it's important to know where we've come from.
Audience: 10-15 year old and anyone interested in their education.
