Annette Kellerman was once one of the biggest stars in the entertainment industry. Born in Australia, she contracted polio at an early age and took up swimming to strengthen her legs. She became a legendary long distance swimmer and, from there moved on to the vaudeville stage and the silent movies. Before and after the First World War, she was a box office sensation, known for doing her own stunts such as swimming with crocodiles.
She was also a fashion designer, and a pioneer in helping women to help themselves.
