Christmas Day

I wrote a life of JC in 2003. Some people are really disturbed that I pointed out that it was about 365 to 1 that he was born on December 25 (a date borrowed from the Romans who celebrated the return of longer days from then on) and that the year is debatable too. For example, King Herod, who was said to be on the lookout for a baby Messiah to kill, died in 4 BC, and the nearest Roman census is in the year 6 AD. Such details don't undermine the truth and beauty of the Christian story itself, but they do indicate that fundamentalist interpretations and beliefs can be built on shaky ground ... or even sand.
